INTRODUCTION
FOR the last four hundred years or more the name of Luigi Cornaro has been widely known in all works published on the various aspects of health and longevity. He was, as most people probably know, an Italian nobleman who was born in the year 1467 and died in his ninety-ninth year in 1565. The story of his life appears to be a very simple one. Until he was between thirty-four and forty years of age he lived as became the members of his class at that time, eating and drinking liberally. Being born with a frail constitution, he found himself very much the victim of his own habits, broken in health and spirits and with little prospect of continuing his existence. His physicians, clearly wise men in their generation, told him that there was only one course open to him if he wished to overcome his afflictions:
