The "Rain Queen" is the traditional ruler of the LoBedu tribe. Their tribal trust territory is in the north-east of the Province of Limpopo, South Africa. It has a romantic history enshrined in the novels of Rider Haggard. "She" of his novel of that name was inspired by the Rain Queen. Credited with power over the weather, she was feared by other tribes. They believed that if they offended her she would inflict a drought on their territory. She was known as "She who must be obeyed." "In the land of the Rain Queen" describes some of the highlights of the author's travels in that district, while preaching the gospel and ministering to the poor.
