Student Christopher Brewer decides to revisit an Austrian village, the scene of a happy school holiday. But at his hotel he encounters a middle-aged English export salesman who has gone AWOL. Disillusioned, reactionary and hard-drinking, he is the antithesis of Christopher. But Chance forces the pair to endure each other's company for the weekend.
