He is my son Alhaji Sule Sanusi is a kola nut merchant based in Ilorin. Having been rich to the acknowledgement of many, his desire is to have a male child who will inherit his estate after death. As there is no male child among the three issues his wife has for him, he decides to marry a second wife. The second wife, indeed, gives him a son. But it all turns out to be a pyrrhic victory. The son, Sadeek, brings to Alhaji Sanusi’s life regrets, sorrows and hypertension that hasten his death. Sadeek’s early life is characterised with waywardness that lands him in prison. He comes out of the prison to become a dipsomania; therefore, his life is characterised with excessive drinking. Out of drunken stupor, he unknowingly gives himself away to armed robbers who later burgle his printing press and cart away all his machines and materials. The consequences of his excessive drinking do not stop at the bugling of his printing press, Binta, the wife his mother marries for him to stem the tide of his drinking habit, and his mother eventually become victims of his drinking habit. But the most traumatising consequence of his drinking habit is Sale, his little son, who is feared dead with his auntie in a ghastly motor accident in her attempt to take him to her care, as his father lacks the wherewithal for his upkeep. But complications arise years later when Sadeek discovers that his son, who is feared dead, is the editor-in-chief of Masses Guardian. “He had tried often and often to change, but all his efforts to do this had resulted in vain. The propensity to drink ferociously drove him hard. There was a disembodied force pushing him against his stance of promptitude to confront that evil propensity. Whenever the force rose against him, he felt his manly instinct melting away. The force had now driven him to hate his mother; it had driven him not to care for Sale, his only son; it had driven him to unknowingly give himself to armed robbers; it had driven him to default his house rent six times.”
