The Elizabeth Tower (formerly known as the Clock Tower of the Palace of Westminster or commonly known as Big Ben ) is a clock tower structure on the north-east side of the Houses of Parliament in Westminster , [1] the capital city of London , the country Brother . On Queen Elizabeth II 's 60th birthday parade , the British Parliament announced that Big Ben would be renamed Elizabeth Tower as of June 4, 2012. The tower is a globally recognized British cultural icon , a symbol of stability, security and democracy. It is one of the most prominent symbols of Great Britain and parliamentary democracy, [2] and the tower is often used in scenes from London.
