Bishop, our narrator, a semi-reclusive insomniac, searching, hoping for solace, bargaining the past with the present, wants his life to start. As a writer, a smoker, a drinker, he isn’t in search of that American dream. He doesn’t want to be exorbitantly wealthy or famous; he just wants to earn for his own. What he dreams, when he dreams, are all those things just shy of reality.
