I am a doctor. Let us say, as you read this book, that I am your doctor. You have issues that we must discuss. Keeping your welfare in mind, I will make certain recommendations, for I wish only to help you. You are intelligent and ambitious, but I fear for your future. You have goals, you feel you know what is right for you. For this reason I do not merely recommend; I plea. As your doctor, I know something that you may not: I know why you should not go to medical school. As your doctor, let me make a statement that is true and difficult and ironic but is necessary that I establish from the start, and one that you must accept like the facts of an anatomical handicap: you cannot know the nature of this decision you are making to become a doctor unless you are already a doctor.
