Walking Long chronicles one and a half years in the lives of Pacific Northwest natives and avid hikers Julian Bentley Edelman and David Edelman, a pair of self-proclaimed Wrinklies (or “badasses,” as some of their friends would have it). The book’s through-line is the couple’s long, vigorous walks and hikes. But Walking Long is much more than an outdoor enthusiast’s read. Through their hiking adventures in the Age of Covid, we see the evolution not only of their relationship, but also their individual characters. These characters come to light through funny stories about misadventures in the wilderness and vignettes about their childhood. Written in real time, the book covers events from the early days of Covid-19, to George Floyd's murder, to the U.S. presidential election and subsequent insurrection, to climate change and the state of the American psyche in general—and how these events were experienced by two Wrinklies with backpacks. It contains over 40 color photographs of the places Julian and David chronicle in their alternating chapters. Have a laugh and a ponder, and then: go outside!
