A tragi-comical story about being alone in Chairman Mao's China -- Sometimes you need a revolution to realise that the choices you made were wrong -- Change slowly reaches a quiet village in rural China, like a Diesel engine, taking time to speed up, but hard to stop once going. The change, started by big people in big cities, eventually trickles down to the agricultural communities. Xu lives in one of these, with the grandparents of his found and lost love, Yu-Lin. Like the revolution, Xu was also once new to the village. He was sent there from the city to learn and be changed. The routine which had set in is disturbed by the revolution, prompting Xu to reassess the choices he has made in the past. The turmoil during an expedition to find the much desired iron ore, followed by the hardship caused by the failing revolution force him to act.
