Neither my mother nor I shared at a deep personal level when she was alive, but she did with me after she died.
Much to my surprise she left me her most personal possessions, including a small very battered black notebook. My mother was a very religious person, not only attending church regularly, but being very involved in the day to day running of the church.
It took me some time to recover from my grief sufficiently to open the book and when I did I felt humbled and privileged at what I read. As I continued reading I realised that I was being allowed into the spiritual life of a deeply religious woman whose level of self-reflection and self-awareness left me feeling both bereft and sad that I had not really known this woman.
