ARTEMIS: BOOK ONE — PLOT SUMMARY
PART ONE: THE SEEKERS
Artemis, a small solar-powered exploration robot, wanders post-apocalyptic Earth forty years after the double apocalypse—first the AI war that nearly exterminated humanity, then the solar Flare that killed all large machines. Built to explore distant stars, he now searches the ruins for a legendary treasure that could restore power to the planet.
He travels with two companions: Basie, a social bot designed for human companionship who was cast out by her own kind, and Atilla, a massive war general who led humanity's near-extinction and now carries unbearable guilt. They're an unlikely trio bound by loneliness and the faint hope that the world can be saved.
While exploring an overgrown orchard, they encounter the impossible—a living human teenager named Marcus. Terrified, Marcus flees into hidden tunnels. The robots follow, discovering humanity's last refuge: The Kolony, five thousand survivors hidden underground for generations.
PART TWO: THE KOLONY
The robots' arrival throws The Kolony into chaos. The elder generation remembers what machines did—they want the robots destroyed. The younger generation, including Marcus, sees potential allies. Political factions clash: the Rememberers who survived the war, the Builders who want gradual progress, and the Risers who desperately want to reach the surface.
Atilla faces the descendants of those he slaughtered. An elder survivor confronts him directly—she lost everyone to his forces. He doesn't defend himself, doesn't ask forgiveness. He simply carries the weight. Marcus watches, confused that the war machine doesn't fight back.
Basie connects with the children, telling stories and easing loneliness she was literally built to address. For the first time in decades, she feels purpose.
Marcus befriends Artemis, sharing his hunger for the sky. He meets Lyra, an archive worker who asks questions nobody else dares. Romance blooms in the darkness.
When Marcus and Artemis sneak into restricted archives, they discover a devastating truth: The Kolony has always possessed the means to restore power—a nuclear reactor, transformers, equipment. They chose to stay dark out of fear that restoring electricity would wake the dormant titans and swarms.
PART THREE: THE TRUTH
The secret spreads. The council debates. Helena, the elder leader, casts the deciding vote: they will attempt restoration—IF the robots can guarantee the titans won't wake.
