When Emma finds herself with child, she decides that her only option is suicide. She throws herself into the Thames late at night, but is rescued and taken to a nearby home.
William Smythe is a wealthy, well-traveled man who splits his time between the docks in London where his ships berth and his estate in Surrey. He offers Emma and her unborn child another chance at life.
It is 1888, the Autumn of Terror. Jack the Ripper is prowling the streets of Spitafelds. Emma steps into a different world and learns to adapt as she and William and their friend Geoffrey try to solve the secret of the Whitechapel Murderer.
