Ash Saturday

Saturday April 17, 2010 was Ash Saturday. Her flight back to Lagos, Nigeria was cancelled. Moments earlier, she had received a call that her husband of five years and eleven months had just made her a widow. He had died in the morning hours of Saturday in Nigeria. She was left to mourn with her daughter who received the news of her father’s demise on her fifth birthday. Although she had looked forward to celebrating her birthday inside the plane en route to Nigeria with her father once they arrived Nigeria, Funke received a heart-wrenching news that she would never hug her father again.
