PERSUASION IN Rhythm & Rhyme

Enter her former suitor handsome, successful, charming Captain Wentworth just returned from the Napoleonic War looking to marry but not (it seems) to Anne who was persuaded to decline his proposal eight years previously by her vain family. Could there be a ‘second chance romance’ for these estranged former soulmates? This novel is the most pensive and quietly reflective of all Jane Austen’s works as regret, loss, hurt and societal pressures all play their part in separating these former lovers. Austen also keenly observes a changing society where an upwardly mobile thrifty, professional class are contrasted with a status obsessed, stagnant and wasteful gentry. So here it is ‘PERSUASION IN Rhythm & Rhyme’ in all its watchful, wistful shades of autumnal ironic glory.
