Johnny Knox is the teenage child of a welfare mom, who became pregnant with him as a result of being raped at the age of thirteen. He meets a woman, slightly older than he is, and they fall in love and get married. He begins to work himself out of the culture of poverty he was raised in, while his scheming wife, Danielle, attempts to blackmail his biological father, who is the owner of a successful business.
Danielle’s blackmail scheme backfires and results in Johnny’s mother and her boyfriend being killed. Meanwhile, Danielle becomes pregnant with another man’s child and the man persuades her to leave Johnny to come live with him. Johnny is disillusioned and heartbroken, and the story ends tragically.
