Laura Cole, a Scottish process engineer, is not doing great. Recently out of university and thrust into the real world, she’s balancing a new job in the Norwegian oil and gas industry, a long-distance relationship and a growing affection for alcohol. Stressful business trips and the culture shock of Scandinavia aren’t helping. Neither are her friends, co-workers or family members. Everyone seems to struggle and look to unhealthy outlets for relief. They drink too much, mess up at work and plan affairs—if they’re not having them already. Upon a chance encounter with a rival co-worker, Laura discovers her own susceptibility to the same destructive temptations that seduce those around her. It gets her wondering: when it comes to the way she treats herself, to the collapsing relationships all around or to her questionable line of work—does anyone care about the future, or are we all doomed?
