Canada’s child-support guidelines contain seven flaws. First, they assume that the payer and the recipient earn the same income. Second, they assume that the payer incurs no child-related expenses when his children visit him. Third, they assume that the recipient does not save any money when her children visit the payer. Fourth, they assume that the payer incurs no child-related expenses in providing a second home for his children. Fifth, they discriminate against certain children within the same household. Sixth, their shared-custody provisions are illogical. Seventh, their split-custody provisions are illogical.
