Two hundred fifty years ago, my country broke from England and formed a new nation. This book tells the story of that break, as it was experienced by the ancestors and cousins of four people: Sterling Beckwith (Grandfather Sterling, 1905-1992), Carolyn Frances Gooden Beckwith (Grandmother Frances, 1906-2007), Harry Dunlap MacGinitie (Grandfather Mac, 1896-1987), and Emma Beatrice Hess MacGinitie (Grandmother Bea, 1897-1987). Grandfather Sterling and Grandmother Frances are my grandparents, and Grandfather Mac and Grandmother Bea are the parents of my Uncle Gordon.
We were always a complicated and divided country. But I can find a lot to relate to in our complicated and divided ancestors. Watch them fight bravely, flee at the first sign of the foe, and freeze in far too few clothes for a hard winter.
