Logistics management involves planning, monitoring and controlling of the flow of goods, information and other resources, between the point of origin and the point of consumption in order to meet the requirements of consumers. Logistics involve the integration of information, transportation, inventory, warehousing, material-handling, and packaging.
The logistics objectives must focus on optimization of customer satisfaction and logistics cost. To maximize customer satisfaction implies a higher level inventor, premium transportation, availability of products at all outlets irrespective of the economic feasibility of distributing to such outlets etc. Thus, if we minimize logistic cost, the customer satisfaction will be adversely effected, and if we go to maximize the customer satisfaction, the cost implication will not be affordable. Thus, we need to mark a trade off between the logistic cost and the satisfaction of the customer. This must be the object of the logistic function of a firm.
