Stefan has always found comfort in logic, routine, and the certainty of things that can be measured. But when he opens his eyes aboard a bullet train racing along the side of a volcano, those rules no longer apply. His longtime friend Jonas is beside him and seems remarkably unsurprised by where the train is taking them.
Their destination is the Zauberreich, a hidden realm where Stefan’s girlfriend, Kai, and Jonas’s girlfriend, Maila, await them. Time behaves differently here, paths appear from nowhere, and life seems untouched by the pressures of the Earthly Realm. There is beauty, abundance, community, and the promise of something freer.
Yet the Zauberreich is only the beginning.
Together, Stefan, Kai, Jonas, and Maila journey into other realms, each shaped by radically different ideas about how people should live. What begins as an extraordinary exploration becomes increasingly unsettling as admirable ideals are carried to their extremes. Protection can restrict freedom. Order can demand obedience. Even happiness can become something imposed rather than chosen.
At the center of it all is Rainer, a charismatic authority whose reassuring explanations become more selective as Stefan’s questions multiply. Stefan must learn the difference between guidance and influence, and between being offered a choice and being quietly led toward one.
As the four friends search for truth and consider the lives they want to build together, they must decide where they belong and how much they are willing to surrender for the promise of certainty.
Stefan and the Zauberreich is a thought-provoking contemporary fantasy exploring belief, love, loyalty, authority, and freedom. In worlds where even good intentions can become dangerous when carried too far, Stefan discovers that the greatest threat to freedom may not be having a choice taken away, but being persuaded to surrender it willingly.
Reader Content Note: This story explores mature themes including religious belief, authoritarian control, loss of autonomy, reproductive autonomy, childbirth and blood, separation of children from parents, societal instability, natural disasters, and threats of large-scale harm.
