Math Mammoth Metric Measuring 2 covers measurement-related topics for approximately grades 4-5 (ages 9-11).
The lessons cover metric length, weight, and volume, temperature in the Celsius scale, the 24-hour clock, elapsed time, and conversions within the metric system. The book contains both explanations of the concepts and the exercises, and is thus termed a worktext. It requires very little teacher preparation in general; however in several lessons you will need to gather measuring equipment beforehand, such as a ruler, scales or measuring cups.
We start out with 4th grade topics, studying separately the metric units for length, weight and volume in three lessons. These lessons focus on conversions between the units and word problems. If you are looking for lessons that include lots of measuring activities, please check out the book Math Mammoth Metric Measuring 1.
Next, the book contains several lessons aimed for approximately the 5th grade where students learn the basics of the metric system with the prefixes of the various units, and how to convert between the units.
Then it is time to look at temperature. The lessons deal with temperature in Celsius degrees, how to read a thermometer and temperature line graphs.
The lessons on time don’t teach how to tell time or read the clock (for those topics, please check out the book Math Mammoth Clock). Instead, the focus is on conversions between various units of time, the 24-hour clock and calculating elapsed time.
