Peeking through the Knothole, Volume 4: Black Baseball in Kansas City, 1870–1919, features two essays about the early history of Black baseball in Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas City, Kansas prior to the founding of the Negro National League and the Kansas City Monarchs in 1920. The first essay provides an extended overview of the prominent teams and players in the metropolitan area straddling the state line. The second essay explores in more detail the early attempts to organize intercity leagues of Black teams that included Kansas City prior to 1920, and the challenges faced in these efforts.
