A modern perspective on the development and diversification of volunteer and community policing in the United Kingdom. Looking at themes of diversity and ethnicity as they relate to police services in a modern and ever developing, multi-racial society. The author tentatively suggests that institutionalised racism / prejudice operates outside of the realms of colour or ethnicity and that police services would benefit widely from taking leaps into the unknown in terms of diversification and new ways of recruiting. The author sets the scene for the challenges of recruitment and the engagement of an ethnically diverse policing system.
