MAPS: 2001 - 2009

I have created my recent work on out-of-date, somewhat tattered maps. Most are from my car’s glove compartment or gifts from widely traveled friends. By the time I finish painting and drawing on them, the original maps are barely recognizable. In some works, roads become rivers or are clogged with flowering vines. In others, coastlines are flooded and inland seas re-hydrated.
In all of the work, erosion, water, overgrown plant life and fungi have replaced humanity as the determining force on the land. In many of my maps the alterations might represent the geological past as well as our future. Compass Rose: Wyoming, for example, shows the great inland seas that once filled what are now deep valleys.
