Fräulein Flanagan is the story of Florrie Flanagan who struggled to improve her life beyond the boundaries of her poor existence in the early part of the twentieth century and intriguingly changed herself from an Irish Miss Flanagan to a German Fräulein Flanagan. She became a kitchen maid aged fourteen at a small day-school. It was a glimpse of a better life. She secretly used the school's educational resources to teach herself German. The Headmistress was so impressed by her determination that she agreed to educate her to university entrance standards. Her life was then a continuous adventure of academic success but all the while accompanied by her mother's attitude that 'it wasn't for the likes of them', a secret murder committed by her brother and her romance with a German prisoner-of-war. She completed her studies in Germany where she re-met her German sweetheart Both were persuaded to enter the world of espionage which curiously propelled her in the direction of her sought-after future.
