This is an extremely powerful story of a young Maasai man, from his late moranism days through five years of mission schooling and transformation to his life with his girlfriend who was his ex-girlfriend’s sister. The drama in the love-triangle takes a major part in the book as it brings out the theme of the story.
His early life, as a moran, prepared him for a life of humility, before he met a white man, but through his dream of bringing a change to his community, he came to realize that he had to go away in order to come back, with every knowledge he needed to accomplish his mission, after he was inspired by a friend who was a Maasai and could do what a white man can do.
This theme, which has implications far beyond the obvious cultural parallel, is skillfully handled. The incidents of the story are wholly absorbing. The novel has already won an award in 2020, and has been adopted in the “Olakira film”.
