A retired estranged couple reluctantly team up to help their son, the head administrator of a community hospital district, to combat a sophisticated embezzlement frame-up. They are assisted by their son’s divorced wife and troubled teenage techno-geek grandson. Hint: None of the characters get along with each other.
In the process of identifying the culprit behind the embezzlement, the family members begin to reconnect to one another. RTJ is a comic story about generational family tensions being overcome and family reconnecting. The other major theme is the politics of fear as practiced in the US with a primary emphasis on the paranoia and potential for privacy abuses through the Patriot Act. Subthemes include our society’s increasing overreliance upon electronic gadgets/services, the incompetence of our justice system and intergenerational differences. Visual and physical comedy heavily accents the entire novel but in very novel ways.
