Prayer House is a supernatural horror novel that weaves together the story of Naomi Grace Holloway, a woman who is called to uncover and confront the dark history of a series of hidden, abandoned churches across the Southern United States. These "Prayer Houses" were originally built by enslaved people to shelter runaway slaves during the period of slavery, but over time, they became twisted by the pain and suffering of those who sought refuge there.
Naomi inherits a map of these secret sites from her late grandmother, along with an ancient Psalm Book, and embarks on a journey to visit each of these sites. Along the way, she encounters powerful, restless spirits—ghosts of the enslaved and the oppressed—trapped in the Prayer Houses. As she moves from one site to the next, Naomi is confronted by the echoes of history: the rage, grief, and unfinished business of the past.
The novel explores themes of trauma, the weight of history, and the desire for release from the chains of suffering, but it also touches on the idea of reckoning with the past. At the heart of the story is Naomi’s quest to free the trapped souls and prevent an ancient and vengeful force, the Hollow God, from escaping and unleashing chaos. The Hollow God represents the earth’s grief and rage—the culmination of centuries of suffering and injustice.
As Naomi progresses, she begins to uncover more about herself, her ancestry, and the powerful legacy of those who came before her. Ultimately, she faces the responsibility of being the one to release the trapped souls and put an end to the Hollow God’s reign, while also coming to terms with the power she now carries—the burden of history, grief, and the spirits of the land.
The book is a haunting journey through the haunted remnants of Southern history, blending horror with spiritual reckoning and drawing on the mysticism of the land itself.
