From Violence to Commonwealth is a critical history of Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (ETA) and the Basque conflict, examined through the political and philosophical framework of Moshe Reed Thought. Beginning with ETA’s formation under the dictatorship of Francisco Franco and continuing through armed struggle, democratic transition, state counterviolence, ceasefires, disarmament, and the organization’s final dissolution, the book explores how revolutionary movements emerge, transform, and become trapped within the institutions and methods they create. Neither a romanticization of political violence nor a defense of unchecked state power, this book examines the contradictions of nationalism, revolutionary vanguardism, terrorism, counterterrorism, cultural repression, shadow sovereignty, and the difficult transition from armed conflict to democratic political life. It argues that genuine historical grievances do not grant moral immunity to revolutionary organizations, just as political violence does not excuse torture, unlawful counterviolence, or abuses committed by the state. Through Moshe Reed Thought, the book develops an alternative political vision centered on democratic self-government, economic participation, worker cooperation, regional autonomy, cultural freedom, layered sovereignty, institutional accountability, and the fundamental right of every person to refuse domination. More than a history of one organization, From Violence to Commonwealth is a study of the relationship between people and institutions, causes and methods, liberation and power. Its central argument is simple: no party, state, nation, corporation, or armed vanguard has the right to substitute itself for the people it claims to serve. A people is larger than an organization. A cause is larger than a tactic. The weapon must eventually fall silent so that the difficult work of building the commonwealth can begin.
