Most of the Ortego families in Southwest Louisiana can trace their roots back to Jean Joachim Ortego and his wife, Maria Josephe D. De Soto. Maria is the granddaughter of Louis Antoine Juchereau De St. Denis, the founder of Natchitoches, Louisiana. Jean J. Ortego was born in Spain and married Maria in the Orleans Territory of the USA. Most of their eight children were born in Southwest Louisiana.
Jean Joachim Ortego’s lineage can be traced back to the oldest known Ortego family, Antoine De Ortega (note the spelling with an "a") and his wife, Catalina Berceruelo, who were married in 1640.
Of the eight children born to Jean Joachim Ortego and Maria Josephe Damascene De Soto, four married into the Fontenot family. However, all eight children are considered the progenitors of the Ortegos, who were born and raised in Southwest Louisiana.
