Aaron and the Reset Button is a gentle story about a seven-year-old boy who is loving, kind, helpful, and playful, but who struggles to manage frustration when his feelings become too big. When Aaron yells, screams, cries, or says things he does not mean, his friends step away, leaving him feeling rejected and confused. The story introduces Aunt Marie as a caring adult who helps Aaron understand that people do not leave because they dislike him; they step back because they do not know how to help when he is upset. Through Aunt Marie’s own childhood experience, Aaron learns that frustration is a normal feeling and that emotional control is a skill that can be practiced over time. The central tool in the book is the “reset button.” Aaron learns to notice the first signs of frustration, pause before yelling, breathe, and focus on one happy thought, such as playing soccer. This gives him a simple image children can remember when their feelings become overwhelming. Parents and caregivers can use this story to talk with children about naming emotions, noticing body signals, and practicing calming strategies during peaceful moments rather than waiting until a child is already upset. Children often learn emotional regulation gradually, with repeated support, modelling, and reassurance from trusted adults.
