Life for a siren is a real pain. At least if you ask Hera. She has been through most experiences that a siren is expected to go through, and after having spent over four hundred years with her ''partner'', the stoic and philosophical Melp, age seems to have made its mark on her and given her license not to give a shit anymore. One night, however, whilst seated on a rocky shore, singing their song of temptation in an attempt to lure unsuspecting ships and the humans that they house into their doom, life throws them a new surprise in the form of an unwanted blast from the past...
'In the Water's Dark' is a grisly, relentless, partially comical, and unapologetic short story by Nat Isaacs. Highly graphic, highly explicit, and highly messed up, it is a tale that revamps the ancient myths about merfolk, in particular sirens, in a modern setting, whilst simultaneously maintaining the classic traits provided by said myths that made the sirens of old so infamously terrifying.
Part One of The Sliver Tales, an ongoing narrative series.
