What if the beaches you visit every summer hold more than what meets the eye? In the tidepools, within the sand, and along the shoreline, there are entire ecosystems quietly existing, often overlooked by the people who pass through them each day. This book explores North County beaches through close observation, examining human impact, conservation, and the hidden life that makes up these coastal environments. As a student at High Tech High North County, I made sure each page reflects my extensive research and firsthand field work. Through careful observation of local beaches, I focused on noticing details that are often ignored, from microscopic life to patterns in the sand and the presence of human activity. I also spoke with locals to gain a broader understanding of how people experience and interact with these spaces. Through this work, I hope to encourage deeper thinking about conservation and inspire readers to ask questions about the beaches they visit. Each chapter focuses on a different beach and includes data, facts, and interviews, along with personal writing that captures my evolving perspective on nature and the coastline. While the book can be read from beginning to end, each chapter also stands on its own.
If you enjoy the beach and want to see it from a new perspective, this book invites you to slow down, look closer, and reconsider what it means to truly observe and appreciate the North County coastline.
