Daniel Lacey is a piano tuner whose aim in life is to feel in tune with the natural world around him, and to this end he has remained apart from the rest of society. His shop in Imperial Square, with its coffee bar tended by the serene Aysha, is an oasis of harmony in a troubled and divided city; but at one time it has been a bank, and Daniel has sublet the strong room to an eccentric accountant. What is Gordon Wallace storing below the shop? The question intrigues the thoughtful Detective Inspector Trent; and so Daniel is forced into contact with a world he has been at pains to avoid, especially when he is confronted by the bigoted Lionel Thor, which leads to a compelling climax in this unusual thriller with its wider philosophical implications.
