In July 2001 my wife Sara and I had an InterRail holiday in Europe, most of which was spent in the Czech Republic. Some of the time we stayed with my pen friend Bohumil Štícha. This is an account of the parts of the holiday that relate to the history of my family in that country, especially Wilhelm and Hedwig Schiller, my maternal grandparents.
Hedwig and Wilhelm had two children, Kurt (Ken) and Klementine (Kay). Kurt's escape from Austria to England in 1938 is written up in The Schiller Family – 1938 and All That (typewritten family document). Klementine escaped in 1939, married Frank Wright and had two children, Nic, the author, and Jackie.
I first wrote this in December 2002 as a photo scrapbook for my mother. In this form, it is intended as a family document.
Firstly, I deal with Theresienstadt, the Jewish transit camp that Wilhelm and Hedwig were sent to in 1942. Then I describe what we found in Pohrlitz, where they and our ancestors were born.
