As an assistant curator at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, Philippa has an odd choice of boyfriend: the coarse, tactless and ill-educated Ben shares none of her cultural interest and appetite for the arts, but she senses that he has some hidden qualities that have yet to surface. When an Egyptian vase is discovered in the cellars of the museum and the true nature of its alien contents revealed, the depths and complexity of his mind start to become apparent to all. Philippa, Ben and their friends become embroiled in a trail of kidnap and revenge as a five-thousand year old war between rival worlds is rekindled by the find. How were they to know that their discovery was being followed by a mysterious sect in Cairo as well as the non-human commuters on the Victoria Line of the London Underground? Nor could they have predicted Ben's fearless quick thinking and his natural ability to counteract the powerful forces that are unleashed to kill them.
