It’s 5:25pm, PST July 3, 2225. Sentient life in our solar system hangs in the balance. In “The Flamingos are Headed Home,” the third book of the Arkendream Series, humanity confronts a coronavirus spliced with human DNA to form a symbiotic relationship with human consciousness. It causes billions of homo sapiens to self-immolate spontaneously. The final battle pits humans who have time-traveled through the Horn of Gabriel from a Tellurian colony on Titan and from biblical Judea to join the fight in which love is their best weapon. In this novel, Patrick focuses his lifelong curiosity onto how things, from the largest scale to the smallest scale, work as an integral whole. His conclusion is that the mutual attraction between all things that have mass, which we know as gravity, has been integrated into us and our societies and even the galaxies as the “feeling” of attraction we know as love, and that together gravity and love inform the evolution of not only our perception of the universe but of the universe itself. Patrick portrays Darwinism as half-right in this story: the process of natural selection does determine the survival of the fittest in the environment. Patrick contends that Darwin didn’t take into full enough account the role conscious choice plays in the selection process. Nor, as was evidenced by Darwin’s own search for meaning through the natural selection of spiritual pursuits, did he take into full account the possibility that conscious selection and evolution may not be confined to earthly habitats but are part of a universal evolutionary process. “Flamingos Are Headed Home” addresses these issues head-on in the hope of uncovering meaning through the invocation of humanity’s greatest asset—imagination—as a vehicle for the evolution of love.
