The Lost Ring Project is an ongoing interactive work created as a performance/intervention. The work begins with the fabrication of faux gold rings, stamped 14-karat gold. These rings are then taken to predetermined cities. The ratio of rings placed in each city is determined by the population density of that particular city. These rings are then strategically scattered in high profile areas, within the city. Then posters are placed near the drop site, and arrangements are made for an advertisement to be placed in the local newspaper. The work is based on happenstance – the off chance a person finds one of the placed rings. Individuals must find not only the ring, but also notice one of the posters/ads containing details of the lost ring. Furthermore, each person must initiate contact with me (a stranger) via the telephone.
The collection of data and the conversation/interaction have been compiled into both an exhibition and this book.
