As the nineteenth century draws to a close, five families are drawn together by the opening of a new hydropathic hotel on the south coast of of England. As they gather for this joyful celebration, they can have no idea of the challenges and perils that await them in the coming century. We follow their lives and loves as dramatic world events that they could not have foreseen take them to such far-flung places as the Shetlands, France, Norway, North Africa and Palestine.
