de Piles on Painting, Original Texts

This volume reproduces the pages (4 pages of the original books, at full size, on 1 page of this A4 papercover volume) of 3 volumes published in the 18th century: "Ouevres Divers" of M. de Piles, Tomes 5 and 3, and "Recueil de Divers Ouvrages Sur la Peinture et le Coloris". These three volumes seem to cover all the published writings of the 17th century de Piles, painter and member of the French Accademy. These texts include: de Piles' translation of du Fresnoy's poem on painting, with his own even more extensive commentaries; remarks on all the famous modern painters, as well as those of antiquity; various articles on technique; several dialogues on subjects like taste and color. Together they provide an overview of 17th and 18th century French thought on Painting. The texts are in French.
