Like many of his generation, Jude seeks comfort in Technology. It serves to forget his neglected origin. With autistic fervour, he places faith in science. Equations work and the balance between positive and negative is always ensured. Fate takes him to newly independent Ghana, his job, to test fallout from French nuclear testing in Algeria. He and his young wife encounter a world where nature confounds logic and where science is twisted to circumstance. “A people’s bomb cannot harm us,” he is told with such authority that he is forced to accept defeat.
