Malagasy is the official language of Madagascar, spoken by over 18 million people as a first language, primarily belonging to the Austronesian (Malayo-Polynesian) family. Despite its African location, it is closely related to Indonesian and Philippine languages. It uses the Latin script and is co-official with French.
