In 2001, when he was in his late seventies, my father Tony Howard wrote a slim volume titled Memories. He decided to write this when he realised how little he knew about his own great grandparents, and even his grandparents, and how it was impossible to form an impression of what it was like for them living in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Dad decided to start a new tradition, and asked me to write a similar book about what it was like to live in the second half of the 20th and early part of the 21st centuries. He insisted that I include an account of my overland journeys through Africa, so this book is a bit longer than his.
