Philip Eveson’s New Introduction to Biblical Hebrew has been in use as the biblical Hebrew textbook at London Seminary since 1991. It has been used to teach theological students since 2001. First, the biblical examples of text at the head of each chapter are ideally suited to an interactive class where students are called upon to hone their reading and translating skills. Secondly, it has rigorous exercises at the end of each chapter which test a range of skills, including translation from English into Hebrew. This gives the teacher a range of exercises to set for homework, according to the abilities of the students. Thirdly, it covers a lot of ground. Although NIBH does not claim to be a reference grammar, most points of grammar generally encountered in the Hebrew text are given at least some coverage. This means that NIBH is not just a book to learn Hebrew from and then consign to the shelf, but one which remains of use even as familiarity with biblical Hebrew grows.
