Animals were created and evolved to fill the Earth, and have existed in every single habitat known, yet humans have been largely to blame for their demise and loss. In some instances, extinction happened to millions of a species by pure ignorance and cruelty. Consider the Carrier Pigeon, the Dodo, the Elephant Bird, the Woolly Mammoth, the Thylacine (a few modern sightings claimed in Australia), the Northern White Rhinoceros (only 2 females left alive), and so on. It is humankind’s duty to protect and save the animals, but greed, power, environment destruction, culture, trophy hunting and sheer blood sport have seen many animals persecuted to extinction. Education plays an important part in providing information on the best ways to take care of animals. If such drives are initiated by dedicated elders within the community and they act as good role models, then children are liable to act likewise and aspire to be like them. Indeed, sometimes it’s one’s own family that abuse animals especially pets, and when a child sees this, they end up doing the same…so education to protect and look after animals includes both parents and their children working together. Animals are living creatures, the fauna of Earth, and require serious consideration including shelter, food, attention and veterinary care. A dog, for instance, looks up to and respects its owner as its leader. Human beings can foster serious environmental ethos and magnanimity if they continually focus their attention on the well-being of animals, learn about them and implement improvements towards their care. Furthermore, there are numerous books and journals available that provide sound advice to agriculturalists, ecologists, veterinarians and pet owners. In an accountable society, any mistreatment, neglect or abuse of animals is usually liable to attract The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (S.P.C.A.) intervention and prosecution.
