The descendants of Dr. Aaron James are blessed with as history dating back to at least the American Revolution. Patriot Aaron James (1755 – abt. 1838) enlisted in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and served in the Pennsylvania militia. He participated in the Battle of Brandywine and served a total of eight months by the time the conflict closed. Aaron James removed to Yellow Creek near Charlotte, in Dickson County, Tennessee. He lived here the remainder of his years and is believed to have been a substantial figure in the life of his grandson, Dr. Aaron James (1820 – 1904). This early James family is noted for having a minister of the presbyterian faith, Rev. Jim Parrish, and medical doctors such as those like Dr. Aaron James and Dr. Abner C. Parrish. Much of the James-Parrish family removed to Pope County, Arkansas.
Dr. Aaron attended Louisville Medical College and the University of Nashville’s Medical School. He met Martha Elizabeth Holt, a member influential Holt Family of Williamson County (her father removed to Hickman County near Vernon, Tennessee). They married and Dr. Aaron removed from Yellow Creek to the Piney River Community and, finally, to Tumbling Creek in Humphreys County by 1865. During the Civil War, Dr. Aaron is believed to have treated Confederate troops and may have been associated with a band of Guerrilla soldiers. There was a skirmish at the Irish Shanty located near Gillian Station in which Dr. Aaron was arrested, charged with being the captain of a band of guerrillas, and later sentenced to hang for treason against the United States. Before the sentence could be carried out, he was pardoned by President Abraham Lincoln. The incident has been documented by William Calvin James, a descendant, in the work titled “Skirmish at the Irish Shanty.” There has even been a play titled “Burden of Justice: 1863.” In the late 1870s, Dr. Aaron is said to have interactions with the outlaw, Jesse James, while he was living in Humphreys County under the alias “J. D. Howard.”
Dr. Aaron had seven children by his wife, Elizabeth Holt. They were William H. “Bill” James, Enos Hardeman “Bud” James, Ida Penelope James, Hellen Douglas “Nellie” James, Sarah B. “Sallie” James, Mary Elizabeth “Mollie” James, and Lula James. This is their family record.
