The Long history is one that extends back to Revolutionary War Patriot David Long (1758 – 1845) The descendants of Samuel Thompson Long (1835 – 1918), a son of Joseph Howe Long, are the primary concern of this work. He married Sallie Tankersley (1846 -1891) and was a farmer on Hurricane Creek for most of his life. His children include Addie Long (1871 – 1891), Joseph Brown Long (1877 – 1942), Mary Ann Long (1878 – 1962), Martha Long (1879 – 1963), David Long (1881 – 1888), Daniel Elmo Long (1883 – 1908), and Mattie Long (1886 – 1928). The Daniel Long line is the one which the author is a direct descendent of, and special consideration has been given to document his family. He only had one son, Samuel Thomas “Sam” Long (1908 – 1991) who was born the same year in which his father died. His mother remarried to Joe Hurt (1888 – 1939) and had several children by him. Sam T. Long married to Ardath Olene Harbison (1911 – 1986) and moved to Tumbling Creek. Her parents were Sam Harbison (1876 – 1952) and Mary Ann McCollum (1881 – 1950). Sam T. Long was a county surveyor, county magistrate, and farmer who settled first at Water Valley and then at Poplar Grove on Tumbling Creek.
