I am Phoebe an Indian Slave. My story is true, historical and includes the Colonial Militia, George Washington, General Braddock’s defeat, the Delaware Tribe of Brandywine, MD, and my capture and enslavement at Fort Cumberland by a Colonial Militia soldier John Reynolds. Phoebe was taken from her village and held captive then sold into slavery. She was from mixed intertribal Delaware, Shawnee, and Mingo Indians. She was bought by John Reynolds with trade goods and rum. She was sold into slavery by John Reynolds to William Fitzpatrick on the Fluvanna River in Virginia. This historic novel is supported by the facts and records that are presented in this work. Phoebe’s Indian Freedom Suit is included with court records and began in 1760, and she wasn’t freed until 1790. Abrahan Childress and William Cabell were 2 of the many jurors. She persevered for her children. Abraham Childress’s brother was shot down at Brandywine MD during the Revolution. Brandywine MD plays an important role in this book Susquehannock Iroquois Shawnee William Brooks, a cousin of Phoebe, fought in the Revolution and served under George Washington’s command. He settled after the war in Rutherford County NC, and his grandchildren migrated to Russell County VA and joined the “Surviving Indians” there with the Childress families. I am Phoebe is part of the “Surviving Indians of the Clinch River Valley” series by Ray Crouse.
