The amateur detective Philo Vance originally appeared in a series of twelve mystery novels penned by S. S. Van Dine, the pen name of author Willard Huntington Wright, who at the time was a prominent art critic. Philo Vance was also featured in fifteen movies, three radio dramas and an Italian television mini-series. Yet for all his popularity in the 1930s and 1940s, Philo Vance's only comic book appearances were in six issues of Dell Comic’s THE FUNNIES.
