Quality Comic’s anthology series SMASH COMICS debuted in August of 1939. The Great
Depression was still crushing average folk while the drums of war were beating in the air. Comic
books like SMASH COMICS were perfectly crafted for this time period. The anthology format
allowed the series to appeal to a larger swath of the population.
SMASH COMICS' line up for the series' first four issues included the cloak and dagger shrouded
adventures of Espionage, by Will Eisner. Eisner would also contribute to one of SMASH COMICS'
humor features, Archie O'Toole. Superheroes appeared in the series including Bozo the Robot
(don’t let the name fool you) by George Brenner, as well as Invisible Justice by Vern Henkel.
Those are just a few of the engrossing characters populating the tip of the behemoth iceberg of
comics known as SMASH COMICS .
This book was compiled with the best images currently available. That stated, these comics are
over eighty years old. The best efforts have been made to make the pages as enjoyable as
possible but not every panel is perfect and some allowances for the age of the books need to be
considered when judging the overall contents. The stories here were created in a less enlightened
time and there are some images that may offend modern readers.
